New Guitar Teacher for DC, Maryland and Arlington VA

Here is a bio from a new B&B instructor who is centrally located and able to travel to all of DC as well as Montgomery and Arlington Counties.
I graduated from Connecticut College in May 2009 with a B.A. in Music & Technology. My major consisted of various music theory courses such as tonal theory, jazz harmony, 20th century theory, and composition, in addition to private lessons in classical guitar. I was also a member of the student guitar ensemble, where I rehearsed solo and ensemble pieces and performed in recitals throughout the semester. In addition to my classical instruction in college, I’ve also received private instruction in electric guitar styles such as blues, rock, and jazz since the summer of 2006. My favorite styles to play are blues, rock, and jazz.

The summer before my senior year in college, I traveled to Ghana for a college funded internship, where I taught music for eight weeks at a school in a rural town. It was an incredibly rewarding experience which has motivated me to pursue teaching as a career.

Voice Lessons in NW DC and Montgomery County

We are happy to have added an accomplished vocal instructor to our roster. Jean Luc is an articulate and accomplished voice instructor who is currently teaching voice at Howard University as well as B&B Music World.

Jean Luc, countertenor, began singing in the boychoir (Les Petits Chanteurs) of the Holy Trinity School at age seven. He also began playing violin, viola and piano at age of eight at the same school. He played violin in the Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra and appeared with the orchestra as a vocal and violin soloist. He later became director of the Petits Chanteurs, assistant director of the youth orchestra and taught violin and voice at the school as well. He graduated from Howard University with the bachelor and masters of music degree in vocal performance. He is a professional musician, violin and voice teacher with over 20 years experience. He also taught violin and voice at Otttley music school, coached the DC boys Choir. Mr. Princivil is teaching voice at Howard University.

Jean Luc has appeared with the Woodley Ensemble and the Washington Bach Consort. He also appeared as soloist in the Washington-area churches, such as All Souls Unitarian, the Washington National Cathedral, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and the St. Patrick’s Episcopal. He has presented recitals promoting Haitian art songs, and after a season in the chorus of Washington D.C.’s Opera Bel Canto, he has made his solo debut in Verdi’s Rigoletto.

How much should I push my child to learn music?

Below is the kind of response from one of our teachers that indicates a student isn’t interested in continuing. Sometimes it is good to give children the option to choose when to stop lessons.

Well, maybe she’ll come to enjoy another instrument someday in the future.

I hope so…her family is very musical. But I think maybe that intimidates her. The fact that her dad keeps forcing her to have an interest probably makes it worse. She is at that early teen age when she wants to do nothing her parents want her to do. Just sit in her room and text friends.

She did progress though with me. She learned to read music. Early into her lessons…I realized her previous teacher had her copying hand movements on the piano instead of learning fundamentals so that hurt her for a while. She did not know so many basic things and I think that made her frustrated about learning because she could not do much on her own without those tools. But she did not realize that was not her fault…and lost confidence. So she did overcome that and hopefully one day she will come back to music with some confidence.
