Why choose in home music lessons?

In home music lessons have been gaining popularity in recent years.  Although the majority of music teachers teach out of their own studios or from a ‘brick and mortar’ music school, more and more families are finding that it is easier to have the music teacher come to their home.

The controlled environment of a music studio has its advantages, but the frenetic pace of modern day life has encouraged many parents to discover the value of private in home music lessons.  Here are some things to keep in mind if you are considering hiring a private in home music teacher.

First of all, it is the parent’s responsibility to provide a beneficial learning environment.   A clean and uncluttered space free of excessive noise and distractions is an important first step.  Distractions such as TV, telephone, siblings and dogs are detrimental to the focus of the student.

Also, be sure that the instrument itself be in workable shape, whether it is a guitar, piano, violin, drum set or any other instrument.  If you’re taking piano lessons, be sure to maintain the instrument with regular tunings.  Your music teacher will be happy to keep you updated with problems regarding the instrument.  Also, a metronome, music stand and notepad for assignments should be available.  Any music materials should be present.  Don’t waste the first 5 minutes of the lesson finding last week’s material or a misplaced guitar pick.  The teacher is on a schedule and probably has another lesson to go to, so they often can’t stay late.

Keep updated on the progress of the lessons.  It is a great idea to sit in on part of the lesson.  However, it is best to simply observe the lesson and not be a participant.  Let the teacher do his or her job.  You can and should stay in touch with what is being taught, as it is your responsibility to ensure that the student is adhering to the lesson curriculum but don’t stifle the teacher or the lesson.

Because the teacher is saving you time and money by traveling to your home, they will need to charge you a higher rate for lessons or an additional fee that covers travel costs, etc. This is both standard and appropriate in these days of high gas prices, expensive car maintenance and costly time. If you have multiple students in your home, you should be able to negotiate slight reductions in the cost, since the teacher is saving travel time.

In-home lessons can be very convenient for those with particularly busy schedules, but you should understand the extra responsibilities you must accept in return for the convenience of lessons at home.
