Most all people (not just children) like to have a good time and like to be rewarded for efforts put forth! Even if a private music student hasn't completely mastered a lesson but did show "some" effort in practicing, complementing them is vital! The sad thing about some private teachers these days is that they are in it for a paycheck... an easy way out of having to get a "real job" outside of music! Or, they have an "elitist" mentality about playing their particular instrument and that certain "natural abilities" are needed to be good... I say HOG WASH! Understanding that they are forming future generations will help to create a better student and a better home music teacher! You may also want to ask a teacher if they still take private lessons!
