Choosing the Best Music Teacher For Your Child

Learning music takes dedication and hard work.  Children often times don’t understand the amount of effort required to excel at a musical instrument.  They can have a hard time understanding the benefit of private music lessons that they will appreciate later in life, so it is important to find a teacher that will keep them excited and interested in their lessons.  If you can find the right match for your child, you will have less trouble motivating the child to prepare and practice for lessons.

When you interview your music teacher, be sure to look for flexibility on the part of the teacher regarding your child’s lesson planning.  Every child is different, and a good teacher will adapt to your child’s needs.  A strict repertoire may lose your child’s interest quickly, and it may be difficult to regain lost interest.  A good music teacher should be willing to indulge the student to a certain degree, without compromising the lesson plan.

During the first lesson, look for a good sense of patience from the teacher as well as a friendly demeanor.  A good teacher will be quick to praise the student’s successful efforts, while not getting upset when the child has trouble grasping a detail.  At B&B Music World, we encourage teachers to ensure that the student leaves the first lesson with a sense of having learned something.  This develops a sense of accomplishment in young students.

A teacher who can quickly understand how your child learns best and then adapt their approach to your child’s strengths will likely be effective. If there is something during the lesson that your child is having trouble with, is the teacher able to find a way to work through the problem? The better the teacher is at identifying and adjusting to your child’s style of learning, the more efficient he will be in lessons. The more successful your child feels in lessons, the more likely it is that he will stick with them and make the best of them.

Finally, don’t forget to ask your child what they think of the teacher.  Most kids will let you know how they feel after the first lesson.  Of course your child probably shouldn’t be the ultimate decision maker, but their input is important.  If you are interested in finding a private in home music teacher in the DC, VA or MD areas, contact B&B Music World.

One Response to “Choosing the Best Music Teacher For Your Child”

  1. A great music teacher will also make the lesson times fun! Most all people (not just children) like to have a good time and like to be rewarded for efforts put forth! Even if a private music student hasn’t completely mastered a lesson but did show “some” effort in practicing, complementing them is vital!

The sad thing about some private teachers these days is that they are in it for a paycheck… an easy way out of having to get a “real job” outside of music! Or, they have an “elitist” mentality about playing their particular instrument and that certain “natural abilities” are needed to be good… I say HOG WASH! Understanding that they are forming future generations will help to create a better student and a better home music teacher!

You may also want to ask a teacher if they still take private lessons! I do! And I use what I learn in my teaching as well!
